How to dress for winter running

Winter running is more than enduring the cold.

It’s an opportunity to build strength, endurance, and mental resilience under conditions that demand more – from you, and from what you wear. It’s also a chance to experience nature at its most raw and beautiful. Running outdoors in snow, wind, and crisp air brings a sense of freedom you’ll never find on a treadmill.

With over three decades of experience in endurance sports, we’ve developed a winter running collection built to perform in all conditions – from windy intervals to long sessions in sub-zero temperatures. Here’s how to build a functional winter running wardrobe

Outer layer – Protection from the elements

When snow, wind, and rain meet high intensity, you need a jacket that both shields and breathes. We recommend our best-selling Jacket Winter Run Protect and Jacket Run 365 2.0 from Dæhlie. See more product details of the two jackets below.

Should I use tights or pants when running?
Choose a running tights

to maintain intensity throughout the session – warmth must be distributed correctly without trapping moisture. Choose a running pant when you need more protection in the front against wind and snow, combined with ventilation at the back.

Jacket Run 365 2.0

Fellex® Insulation

Stay perfectly comfortable on cold-weather runs. This jacket is powered by Fellex®, an advanced lightweight synthetic insulation that traps body heat while allowing moisture to escape. This intelligent design ensures you stay warm without overheating, and makes every kilometer comfortable.

Ripstop Technology

Developed with an ultra lightweight ripstop material with reinforced threads for exceptional durability and tear-resistance.

Rudolf Bionic Finish® Eco Technology

Treated with Bionic Finish® Eco, a PFC-free, water-repellent finish that keeps you dry during light rain and snow while maintaining full breathability.

Designed for movement

4-way stretch, side splits, and strategically placed elastic panels make the jacket comfortable and ensure optimal movement and mobility.

Layering system

Mastering winter running is all about layering. Start with a baselayer close to the skin that wicks moisture and keeps you dry. Add a midlayer for light insulation that can be adjusted to conditions. On top, use a protective shell that blocks wind and precipitation while allowing heat to escape. When the layers work together, you maintain optimal temperature, mobility, and focus – regardless of session or weather.

See our recommendations for base layers and mid layers below.

Base layer – Manages moisture and keeps you dry

Performance Wool and Compete-Tech are designed for high-intensity training all year.

The lightweight fabric with a blend of merino wool and Tencel regulates temperature, manages moisture, and keeps you dry and comfortable – at any intensity.

Mid layer – Regulates temperature

Use a lightly insulating garment for added warmth. This layer should be easy to add or remove as needed. We recommend Training Wool (80% wool), or Warm Wool (100% Merino wool) from Dæhlie.

A running vest can be a good alternative beneath or on top of a jacket for extra warmth and protection – or to replace the jacket as the outer layer in mild conditions.

A complete approach to winter running

The right gear does more than keep you warm – it enables you to run as planned, whatever the weather. Our Winter Run collection is tested by athletes in real conditions, allowing you to focus on pace, technique, and forward motion – not temperature.

Shoes that match the conditions
Clothing is crucial, but shoes are equally important for a good winter running experience. Surfaces vary more in winter – from wet asphalt to ice, slush, and packed snow. Choose shoes with solid grip, and consider spikes when conditions are icy and slick.
