MATERIALS

Raw materials and material manufacturing make up an essential part of our products and are crucial in determining their longevity as well as environmental impact. We devote considerable effort to ensuring that we make the best possible choices from the perspectives of sourcing, performance, traceability, sustainability and durability when we develop and decide which materials that goes into our final products.

Polyester and Recycled Polyester

Polyester is a versatile and durable fabric that boasts excellent moisture-wicking properties, making it an ideal choice for active wear and outerwear that requires resistance to wind and water. While conventional polyester is derived from crude oil, recycled polyester is made from post-consumer PET, typically sourced from plastic bottles.

At Dæhlie, we are committed to reducing our reliance on crude oil-based materials and have been steadily increasing our adoption of recycled versions, which require less energy to produce. All of our recycled materials are certified, typically by the Global Recycling Standard (GRS) certification.

As of 2022, 44% of our polyester is made from recycled raw materials, calculated based on the weight of the volumes we produce.

Polyamide and Recycled Polyamide

Polyamide, commonly known as Nylon, is a highly durable fabric that offers superior strength, making it well-suited for hard-wearing products such as hiking pants and outdoor jackets.

The recycling industry for nylon is not as established as that of polyester, which has been heavily driven by the recycling of PET bottles. Despite this, the recycling of nylon is continually being developed, and we anticipate both the supply and demand for recycled nylon to increase in the near future. Virgin nylon has a larger environmental impact than virgin polyester, but when recycled, the environmental impact of nylon can be brought down to almost the same level as recycled polyester.

At present, the portion of recycled nylon in our product line remains very small due to the higher cost and limited supply. However, we are actively making efforts to increase our share of recycled polyamide in our products.

Cotton

Cotton is a naturally sourced vegetable fiber that is ideal for producing comfortable, close-to-skin casual wear. It is one of the most widely used textile fibers globally, but at Dæhlie, it represents only a smaller portion of our fiber portfolio.

We do however take our responsibility seriously when it comes to ensuring that the cotton we use comes from responsible sources. A significant portion of the cotton material we introduce into our collections is Oekotex®-100 certified. Given that the environmental, social, and labor impacts associated with cotton are primarily concentrated at the farm level, we are committed to using only cotton that either comes with an established certification scheme or that we have traced through declaration forms, where only certain regions are approved.

TENCEL™

Tencel

fibers are produced by Lenzing who makes these fibers in both Modal and Lyocell versions. They are derived from wood pulp which is harvested from sustainable managed forests and transformed to fibers via controlled processes to assure a minimal environmental impact. In addition Lyocell is produced in a closed loop system which recovers and reuse solvents.

At Dæhlie we include these soft, light and durable fibers in wool mixes and by their own in both active and casual wear.

Down

The insulation capacity and lightness of down makes it an excellent choice for outerwear jackets and midlayers.

At Dæhlie we only use Responsible Down Standard certified down in our products. The certification ensures that the down does not come from live animals and that the five freedoms, as stated by the World Organisation for Animal Health, are upheld. They are:

Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition: By ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.

Freedom from discomfort: By providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

Freedom from pain, injury and disease: By prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Freedom to express normal behavior: By providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.

Freedom from fear and distress: By ensuring conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.
